After a very rainy early spring, and a super dry summer, we didn’t have high hopes for the 2025 harvest. Well, we should never try to predict the whims of nature, because there were a lot of apples out there! We started off in the old overgrown pig fields at Heather Ridge Farm—every year we pick at Heather Ridge we encounter a tree or two we’ve never seen before. Thrilling! We picked the beautiful Duchess of Oldenburg, Baldwin, Northern Spy, and Golden Russet trees at Byron’s place in Tannersville. We spent quite a few days on public DEC land in the Catskills—some of the gnarliest picking spots—where we found a fully intact deer skeleton and several beautiful birds nests. Steve’s heirloom trees produced a good amount of fruit, as did the wild trees at the lovingly manicured horse farm called Bell Hill. Luckily, Tina’s wonderful trees produced some fruit this year, as did the single, magnificent Golden Russet tree near Colgate Lake that we always save for last. A cherry on top of a fruitful season. For some reason we found more apple butts than ever before. Did the wacky weather cause an increase in “malformations” or are we just eagle-eye scouts for derrieres…?
